HAVANA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro met here with visiting President of Timor-Leste Jose Ramos-Horta before he concluded a three-day official visit to the island.
"It was a very wonderful experience to have seen Fidel healthy," Ramos-Horta said at the airport here on Sunday night before leaving Havana.
He said that during the meeting they discussed the current situation in Timor-Leste and other issues of international politics.
During his visit, Ramos-Horta received the highest national Cuban award -- the Jose Marti Order, while he brought the Timor-Leste Order in Grade of Grand Collar, conferred by his government of to the historic leader of the Cuban revolution Fidel Castro, in recognition to the support provided by Cuba to his country in health and education.
The two sides established diplomatic relations on May 20, 2002. Some 46,000 Timorese have been educated with the Cuban method "Yes I can" and 600 youths trained as doctors in the island.
Cuba also maintains in the Asian nation a brigade of 193 doctors and paramedics. Health and education as well as energy, agriculture and mining, are the key areas of cooperation between Cuba and Timor-Leste.
