1,000 people evacuated for GSDF disposal of WWII mine in Niigata

NIIGATA —

About 1,000 residents were evacuated in Niigata on Sunday as the Ground Self-Defense Force began work to dispose of an unexploded sea mine believed to have been jettisoned by a U.S. military aircraft on a mission to mine Niigata port during World War II.

The mine, which was found in August at a planned residential construction site, is unlikely to explode, but the GSDF members started out by removing the detonator fuse, according to Niigata city and GSDF officials. The city government and the GSDF designated an area within a radius of 300 meters of the disposal site as a restricted zone.
