4 boys rescued from residential fire in Kyoto

KYOTO —

Four boys were rescued from a residential fire in Kyoto early Tuesday, police and firefighters said. Three of the four, who are aged 2, 3, 5 and 6, temporarily fell unconscious after apparently inhaling smoke, but their condition is stable, police said.

The fire broke out at around 12:05 a.m. Tuesday at Akihiro Juryo’s home located on the second floor of a seven-story apartment building in Shimogyo Ward and was extinguished about 40 minutes later, police said.

Juryo, 24, and his 24-year-old wife were not at home at the time of the fire as they had gone out around 10 p.m. Monday after putting their sons in bed, according to police.

The area near a closet in the room where the boys were lying was badly burned, they said.

A neighbor said she knocked on the door of Juryo’s apartment after a fire alarm went off around midnight Monday and she saw smoke coming from under the door. The door was locked, she said.
