David Bernstein is set to become the new chairman of the Football Association after being named as the board's choice.

The FA has confirmed that the former Manchester City chairman was "unanimously" backed.

The appointment of the 67-year-old - currently chair of Wembley Stadium - is expected to be endorsed at a meeting of the FA council on January 25.

Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein had been the favourite for the job, but a nominations committee headed by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside opted for Mr Bernstein.

Sky News sports correspondent Ian Dovaston said the news has come "out of left field".

He added: "The name has come as a little bit of a shock. David Bernstein has been conspicuous by his absence from speculation.

David Dein was thought to be the favourite

"He's a Lanchashire man and a business executive - so he certainly fulfills that role in terms of the business of the FA and getting to grips with the debt problem.

"He's also someone who may step aside from the England team and allow that to be run by what is called Club England, headed by Sir David Richards."

A chartered accountant, Mr Bernstein also sits on the boards of several companies, including French Connection and Ted Baker.

He said: "It is a tremendous challenge but I look forward to working with the board, the staff at the FA and everyone in football from local playing fields to Wembley and the international stage."

Describing Mr Bernstein as the "outstanding" candidate, Mr Gartside added: "He combines strong business and leadership skills with tremendous insight and knowledge of football."

Bernstein's first major tasks will be to progress work on the national football centre at Burton - now named St George's Park - and implement a review of international player development carried out by FA general secretary Alex Horne and Sir Trevor Brooking.
