A dog in Germany has given birth to 17 puppies. Their owner says she is thrilled but exhausted after having to bottle feed them for several weeks, because their mother couldn't cope with the demand.

Ramona Wegemann said that by the time she finished feeding the last puppy, the first would be hungry again. The eight female and nine male puppies were born to her Rhodesian Ridgeback Etana in late September near Berlin. Wegemann, an animal psychiatrist, said that when dogs give birth to so many puppies, usually several of them die within the first week. But all 17 puppies survived. These are Etana's second litter. Her first litter was eight.
