French police have arrested a sword-wielding teenager at a kindergarten in the eastern French city of Besancon, after he had taken 20 school children and a teacher hostage. The 21 were released safely after hours of tense negotiations.
The children, aged four to six, were carried away by relatives who had waited anxiously outside, as police negotiated with the hostage-taker by telephone.
The 17-year-old hostage taker, described as suffering from a personality disorder,is being questioned by police.
Luc Chatel, Education Minister, said, "It's someone who obviously is known for his depressive state. We're in that kind of situation."

The country's elite GIPN police force slipped into the school as the children were being brought lunch.
He said, "We brought in meals, and it was at that moment that the GIPN was able to intervene, separate the children, free them and apprehend the hostage-taker."
The young man appeared to be gentle with his pre-school hostages.
He let several of the children go join their parents outside, and he did not threaten those who remained, even allowing them to go to the bathroom.
But his motive was still unclear.
