Around 800 people braved the winter cold to line up in front of the Sogo & Seibu Co. store in Tokyo's Yurakucho district near Ginza before it opened for business a final time. Staff opened the doors at 10:45 a.m., 15 minutes earlier than usual.

Department store operator Lumine Co., an affiliate of East Japan Railway Co., is planning to take over the building that has accommodated the Seibu department store and open a shopping complex next fall.

The Seibu store opened in 1984 as the fashion trend-setting outlet of the Saison group.
