OSAKA (Kyodo) Sharp Corp. is mulling the construction of production lines at one of its plants in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, to manufacture liquid crystal displays for smart phones, including Apple Inc.'s iPhone, industry sources said Friday.

Investment in the production lines is estimated at ¥100 billion, they said.
The Osaka-based company is currently in negotiations with Apple on details, including the U.S. firm's share of investment and the timing of the start of operations, according to the sources.
Sharp sold its production equipment for LCD displays for TVs at the No. 1 plant in Kameyama to a Chinese electronics maker in summer 2009 and has since been examining how to use the plant building.
Its rivals are also rushing to beef up their production of LCD panels to capitalize on the popularity of smart phones.
Among them is Toshiba Corp., which is considering building a new plant in Ishikawa Prefecture for LCD panels for smart phones.
