Armed police have taken a gunman into custody after a siege overnight at a house in West Yorkshire, sources have told Sky News.

The police officer was shot in Kirkheaton, near Huddersfield in West Yorks

The siege occurred after a male PC was hit by a bullet and suffered minor injuries when the 42-year-old man took aim at a number of uniformed officers from his doorstep late last night.

The gunman then returned inside the property, in the village of Kirkheaton, near Huddersfield, before continuing to fire shots at police.

Sky's Frazer Maude, reporting from the scene, said three loud bangs were heard before the siege ended.

"Sources are telling us they may have been stun grenades," Maude said.

"The man was taken into custody and then put into a paramedic vehicle."

Teams of armed officers had earlier cordoned off the area and surrounded the "isolated" address last night.

Negotiators had been involved in a tense stand-off with the man during the night.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Just after 10pm yesterday officers attended a domestic address in the Kirkheaton area of Huddersfield to arrest a man following an incident earlier in the day.

"The man produced a gun and fired at the officers - a male officer in his 20s was hit and attended hospital for minor injuries but has since been discharged.

"Armed officers have now surrounded the premises and are trying to resolve the situation peacefully although shots have continually been fired at the officers."

The spokesman said that no shots had been fired by the police and the gunman posed no "ongoing" risk to the general public.

It is believed he is the only person inside the property and it is not known what type of gun he possesses.

Police attended the address to arrest the man on suspicion of making threats towards another man at a nearby property earlier in the day, the spokesman added.
