In Rome, a suspicious package found in an underground train has prompted a bomb scare.
The mayor said the device could not have exploded. The city's subway operator said the train was empty when the package was found, and was at an area beyond the platform that is used for manoeuvring.
Police were waiting on forensic tests to identify the powder inside the package. The station remained open. Services during the busy Christmas season were not interrupted.
There have been growing concerns in Europe about holiday season attacks following a suicide bombing in Sweden and official fears of an assault on a European city.
