Fuel cell-powered buses will debut Thursday on Tokyo expressways, starting the world's first regular service of the next-generation eco-friendly vehicles, the energy agency said Monday.
The buses will run one round-trip a day each on two Metropolitan Expressway routes between Haneda airport and the central Tokyo areas of Shinjuku and Hakozaki, where Tokyo City Air Terminal is located, as part of an airport bus service by Airport Transport Service Co., the Natural Resources and Energy Agency said.
The move is part of a government demonstration project to create a society that uses hydrogen as a major power source to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Fuel-cell cars run on electricity generated by the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.
Prior to the start of the bus service, hydrogen filling stations will start operating in Tokyo's Ota and Suginami wards.
