Scattered groups of desert locusts have been discovered in Egypt's southern regions of Halayib and Shalateen, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
The ministry's locust combat unit believes the insects arrived from Sudan and Saudi Arabia, where they were detected last week.
Pesticide squads moved immediately to the locust spots. Meanwhile, combat units in the Red Sea Governorate announced they will remain on alert for a potential breakout after spotting a small number.
Governorate authorities said the small number of locusts do not pose a danger and can be handled with pesticides.
The chief of Halayeb’s Beshareya tribe, Mohamed Seddo, warned of the possibility that just a few locusts could multiply into swarms due to decreasing temperatures conducive to reproduction.
