Ahmed Sadek Abdel Rahman was unjustly arrested on 26 December and detained in Al-Salam police station where he is being tortured, said The Egyptian Observatory for Justice and Law (EOJL) in a note to the attorney general on Wednesday. It claimed that Abdel Rahman has been transferred to another police station, and that his family is unable to locate him.

The note also said that security services in Egypt detain citizens without legal basis and force them to confess to crimes, in violation of the Egyptian law and international charters signed by the Egyptian government.

Calling for bringing the responsible police personnel to immediate trial, EOJL warned of such “hostage” detentions passing unpunished. It also called for the interior ministry to abide by local and international laws that prohibit kidnapping citizens for ransom.
