AFP - A 65-year-old Palestinian farmer was on Monday shot dead by Israeli troops in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical and security officials said.

Adham Abu Selmiya, spokesman for the Hamas-run medical services, named the man as Shaaban al-Qarmoot, and said his body was being transferred to the nearby Kamal Adwan hospital.

The shooting occurred in Beit Hanun, a town which lies about two kilometres (just over a mile) south of the Erez border crossing with Israel.

The army had no immediate comment.
