AFP - At least eight men were killed in heavy fighting in an Abidjan suburb when troops loyal to Laurent Gbagbo went on a rampage in the stronghold of his presidential rival, witnesses said Sunday.

An AFP journalist saw the bodies of four men who appeared to be around 20 years old lying in a street of the populous northern suburb of Abobo, which is loyal to internationally recognised president Alassane Ouattara.

The bodies were riddled with bullets and partially undressed. They were in the Plateau Dokui area of the suburb, near a road leading to the zoo.

A resident said he had seen another four bodies in southern Abobo in Sodeci.
