AFP - British Prime Minister David Cameron has arrived in Afghanistan to assess for himself the situation on the ground, his Downing Street office said.

The BBC quoted Cameron, who arrived Monday, as saying British troops could start coming home from Afghanistan as early as next year.

Progress against the Taliban and in training Afghan military and police made him optimistic about the chances of a British troop withdrawal.
