Sharp to launch tablet computer on Dec. 10

OSAKA (Kyodo) Sharp Corp. said Monday it will launch its Galapagos series of multifunction tablet computers on Dec. 10 and begin taking orders from Friday.

The new gadget will let people read e-books and major newspapers and magazines that will be delivered at designated times.

Some 20,000 titles were be offered, with a goal of increasing that to 30,000 by the end of the year.

The newspaper content will be provided by Nikkei Inc., Mainichi Newspapers and Nishinippon Shimbun Co.

An online music and game service being offered in conjunction with the new product will start next spring, the major electronics maker said.

The product will come in two varieties, one with a 5.5-inch screen that retails for ¥39,800 and one with a 10.8-inch screen selling for ¥54,800.
