NGO disbanded over support for Brotherhood, former MP says

Former MP Anwar Esmat al-Sadat on Tuesday accused the Ministry of Social Solidarity of disbanding a civilian organization due to its support for Muslim Brotherhood candidates during the recent parliamentary poll process.

The Brotherhood is Egypt's largest opposition movement.

Al-Mwasa, a Monufiya-based Islamic charity, provided the governorate's residents with medical services through five hospitals that serve over 1.5 million people in return for nominal fees, according to al-Sadat.

"The government could have sacked the governing board and held internal elections for a new one," al-Sadat said. "But it instead dissolved the whole charity relying on security reports whose motivations are well known."

Al-Sadat, who is also a board member at the Egyptian Federation of Associations and NGOs, stressed that the ministry's decision harms the interests of poor as well as hospital employees.

Egypt's security authorities earlier this week detained a number of Brotherhood members. Analysts believe the arrests were a government response to the group's declaration that it would organize peaceful protests over alleged vote-rigging during the elections.

The Muslim Brotherhood failed to win a single seat in the poll. The group then opted to withdraw its candidates from the run-offs in protest. During the previous parliamentary elections in 2005, the group seized 88 seats, enabling them to level criticism toward ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) policies.

Last week, Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie said the organization aims to adopt strictly peaceful means of protest against the newly-elected parliament.

Kidnappers send France 'proof of life' from spy hostage
France's foreign intelligence service said Tuesday it has received proof that one of its secret agents, Denis Allex, is alive. Allex was taken hostage in Mogadishu by an Islamist group on July 14, 2009.

AFP - France has received "proof of life" of one of its secret agents held hostage by Islamists in Somalia since July 2009, the French foreign intelligence service DGSE said on Tuesday.

A DGSE source said the service had received from the kidnappers "a reply to a personal question" to which Denis Allex, a French secret agent kidnapped by an Islamist group, was able to respond, proving he was alive.

"No detail was given by his captors on the state of his health nor on his location or the conditions in which he is being held," the source added.

The source declined to give further details "for obvious reasons of discretion" given the "particularly difficult" negotiations under way with the kidnappers.

Allex was seized in Mogadishu on July 14, 2009, as was another French agent who was held by a different group, Hezb al-Islam, and freed the following month.

In June France's then foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, said Allex may have been held in the autonomous Puntland region of northern Somalia.

France said the two agents were in Somalia to help train local security forces but the Al-Qaeda-inspired Shebab militant group that seized Allex accused them of gathering intelligence for the French government.

It alleged they were working in support of foreign "forces of the crusade" -- an apparent reference to African Union peacekeeping forces currently comprising some 5,000 troops from Uganda and Burundi.

The Shebab have demanded the immediate end to any political and military support from France for Somalia's fragile central government and the withdrawal of all foreign advisors and private security firms in Somalia.

Somalia has been riven by internal strife for years, with the strongest groups waging a bloody offensive against forces loyal to the weak transitional government.

It is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world, with several foreign hostages believe to be held on its soil and hundreds of foreign seamen held on vessels seized by pirates off its coast.

And she also shows off pretty satin lingerie in shades of pale pink and green - in photos that are guaranteed to leave her male fans hot under the collar.

Irina is clearly becoming accustomed to posing in her underwear after modelling for Italian lingerie brand Intimissimi earlier this year.

And she also stripped to her smalls for a photoshoot in the September 2010 issue of men's magazine GQ - although last month revealed she was considering legal action against the publication after it featured images of her nude which she claimed had been airbrushed.

She has also revealed in the past that she feels comfortable modelling underwear.
'I think the power of seduction is within every woman, but I feel more sexy wearing lingerie,' Irinia said.

She and Ronaldo, who plays for Real Madrid, have been dating since January but she has made it clear she is not interested in his career.

'I'm not a fan of soccer, for sure not,' the model recently confessed.

New York Airports Reopen After Snow Chaos

Airports in the New York City area have reopened after heavy snow along America's east coast dumped four times the usual December snowfall in one day.

Snow brought chaos to large areas of the eastern US seaboard

New York's JFK, LaGuardia and nearby Newark international airport were reopened early today, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The airports were closed after a snow storm which started on Sunday drove snow, gale force winds and lightning across the eastern region of New York leaving thousands of passengers marooned due to the severe weather conditions.

Despite the reopened airports, passengers are still expected to face severe delays to their journeys as clear-up attempts continue.

Eric Schorr, 22, who has been stranded at JFK since December 26 said: "People are exhausted - they want to get home."

The past few days have been a nightmare for air travellers with many stranded

New York's Mayor, Michael Bloomberg asked people to avoid travelling if at all possible.
He told people "to stay home and enjoy their families."

He also went on to defend the city's clean up effort: "The furious pace of the snowfall two-three inches per hour required crews to plough streets repeatedly.

"It's being handled by the best professionals in the business and it really is inconvenient for a lot of people."

Stranded passengers could not leave airports even if they had wanted to - heavy snow had left alternative travel routes at a standstill.

The storm which hit the east coast of the US with winds of up to 80mph, covered the streets of New York with up to two feet of snow, paralysed bus and train services and saw cab drivers abandoning their taxis.

Disgruntled foreigners stranded at airports have already voiced their woes about facilities during the blizzard.

"The airports had promised to put passengers up at hotels overnight but we waited for the shuttle buses to take us there," Yoann Uzan of France said.

"And then the buses couldn't get through because of the weather, so we were stuck here."

Hundreds of musicians scheduled to perform at London's 25th New Year's Day parade are also among the victims of the blizzard and feared they would not arrive in Britain in time.

Siege Ends After Officer Shot In West Yorks

Armed police have taken a gunman into custody after a siege overnight at a house in West Yorkshire, sources have told Sky News.

The police officer was shot in Kirkheaton, near Huddersfield in West Yorks

The siege occurred after a male PC was hit by a bullet and suffered minor injuries when the 42-year-old man took aim at a number of uniformed officers from his doorstep late last night.

The gunman then returned inside the property, in the village of Kirkheaton, near Huddersfield, before continuing to fire shots at police.

Sky's Frazer Maude, reporting from the scene, said three loud bangs were heard before the siege ended.

"Sources are telling us they may have been stun grenades," Maude said.

"The man was taken into custody and then put into a paramedic vehicle."

Teams of armed officers had earlier cordoned off the area and surrounded the "isolated" address last night.

Negotiators had been involved in a tense stand-off with the man during the night.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Just after 10pm yesterday officers attended a domestic address in the Kirkheaton area of Huddersfield to arrest a man following an incident earlier in the day.

"The man produced a gun and fired at the officers - a male officer in his 20s was hit and attended hospital for minor injuries but has since been discharged.

"Armed officers have now surrounded the premises and are trying to resolve the situation peacefully although shots have continually been fired at the officers."

The spokesman said that no shots had been fired by the police and the gunman posed no "ongoing" risk to the general public.

It is believed he is the only person inside the property and it is not known what type of gun he possesses.

Police attended the address to arrest the man on suspicion of making threats towards another man at a nearby property earlier in the day, the spokesman added.
