The leader of Malaysia’s main ethnic Indian party has stepped down after more than three decades at the helm.
S. Samy Vellu leaves a legacy tarnished by the 2008 general elections, when supporters abandoned him in droves over complaints that he was not doing enough for the largely Hindu Indian community in the Muslim-majority country.
Samy Vellu, 74, who had been the unchallenged head of the Malaysian Indian Congress party since 1979, announced his resignation at a party function Monday.
He is expected to formally hand over the party leadership to his deputy, G. Palanivel, later Monday.
