TOKYO —
The Japanese unit of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp will consider setting up a data center in Japan for cloud computing services, the president and chief executive officer of Microsoft Co. said.
The Tokyo-based subsidiary is trying to provide cloud computing services in Japan through a tie-up with Fujitsu Ltd to use the latter’s data center, but will study setting up its own ‘‘if necessary,’’ Yasuyuki Higuchi said.
The unit, which will change its name to Microsoft Japan Co in February, will propose the idea to the U.S. parent while weighing its economic rationality, as cloud computing, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand via the Internet, is a ‘‘rapidly expanding technology,’’ Higuchi said.
It may expand an existing data center in the Tokyo area for the Hotmail web-based e-mail service, he added.
Microsoft currently has data centers for cloud computing services in locations such as the United States and Singapore. In Japan, it tied up with Fujitsu in July to better serve clients who find it uncomfortable to keep important data outside Japan.
