The UN Security Council is still meeting behind closed doors after five hours of consultations on the mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Security council members have been briefed on the issue by UN Under-secretary-general for Political Affairs, Lynn Pascoe. Russia called for the meeting on Saturday. Diplomats say Moscow wants the UN's most powerful body to adopt a statement calling on both sides to exercise maximum restraint.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun said China is deeply worried about the situation. He said China has repeatedly told the parties that if blood were shed on the Korean Peninsula, the people on the two sides would be the first to suffer.
