Meanwhile, at Tokyo Station, 200 passengers were left gawking at a bullet train headed to Sendai Saturday when the engineer forgot to open the doors. The train left without them for its next stop at about 5:35 p.m.

The accidents were embarrassing for JR East, which was celebrating the Tohoku Shinkansen Line's first day of service to Aomori, marking the end of a 38-year undertaking that extended it north past Morioka, Iwate Prefecture.

A total of eight runs were suspended and 22 delayed on the three shinkansen lines.

Around 4:20 p.m. Saturday, a bullet train from Tokyo arrived at Shin-Aomori Station about three hours late.
