The body of a American tourist has been found bound and stabbed near Jerusalem, Israeli police say, hours after another woman was found alive nearby.
The survivor was reported to be a 46-year-old tour guide who emigrated to Israel from the UK in the 1990s.
She had also been stabbed, and told police the pair were attacked by two Arab men while hiking in a forest.
Earlier, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld had said the dead woman was a British citizen.
Police and border guards launched a major overnight hunt after her companion managed to escape and raised the alert on Saturday.
Forest huntThe injured woman was named by Israeli media as Kaye Susan Wilson.
She told police that they were attacked by two men while walking in the Mata forest, near the town of Beit Shemesh.
As the attack unfolded, Ms Wilson pretended she was dead in an effort to escape more blows, she told police.
She then managed to flee the scene and reach the road, Israeli media reported, where she met families who helped her notify police.
After speaking briefly to police, Ms Wilson was taken to hospital in Jerusalem where was treated for her stab wounds and was said to be in a stable condition.
As she received treatment police and border officials mounted a large-scale hunt for her friend, fanning out through the forested areas around Beit Shemesh.
Searches were also carried out near the Green Line that divides Israel from the West Bank, the Haaretz newspaper reported, as fears grew that the missing woman had been kidnapped.
Ms Wilson told police there was no immediate indication of a motive for the attack.
Speaking to Haaretz, Mr Rosenfeld said: "She did not know who they were, or what the reason for the attack was. We are examining whether this is a nationalistic stabbing, but other leads are being examined as well."
