GM head calls Toyota Prius 'geek-mobile'

NEW YORK —

The top executive at General Motors Co on Friday went at rival automaker Toyota Motor Corp and called its popular hybrid car, the Prius, ‘‘the geek-mobile,’’ the Associated Press reported.

GM CEO Dan Akerson said in a speech to the Economic Club of Washington, DC, ‘‘We commonly refer to the geek-mobile as the Prius. And I wouldn’t be caught dead in a Prius,’’ according to the AP.

It is rare for global corporate leaders to shoot down a product of their rival companies.

GM is pinning some of its hopes for a comeback on its new plug-in electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, which would compete with the Prius, according to the report.

About the Volt, the AP quoted Akerson as saying, ‘‘This actually looks good.’’
