FUKUSHIMA (Kyodo) A snow-covered highway remained blocked by a truck Sunday in Fukushima Prefecture, leaving about 300 vehicles stranded and traffic at a standstill following an accident the previous day.

Workers are trying to get the truck back into its original lane, but other vehicles are also getting buried by the heavy snow, the transport ministry's Kooriyama highway office said.

The highway office is providing food and fuel to drivers forced to spend the night in their vehicles as they continue to extract cars and remove snow from the highway.

As of Sunday evening, the number of stranded vehicles had been reduced to about 100, but there's no end in sight to the operation, the office said.

The situation is so bad that the Ground Self-Defense Force's Kooriyama garrison on Sunday dispatched about 100 soldiers to help at the request of Fukushima Gov. Yuhei Sato.
