Sharp eyes building production lines for panels for smartphones

OSAKA —

Sharp Corp is mulling the construction of production lines at one of its plants in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, to manufacture liquid crystal displays for smartphones including Apple Inc’s iPhone. Industry sources said that investment in the production lines is estimated at 100 billion yen.

The Osaka-based company, known as the maker of Aquos brand flat-screen television sets, is currently in negotiations with Apple on details including the U.S. firm’s share of investment and timing for starting the operation, according to the sources.

Sharp sold its production equipment for such displays for TVs at the No. 1 plant in Kameyama to a Chinese electronics maker in the summer of 2009, and has been examining how to use the plant building.

Its rivals are also rushing to beef up their production of liquid crystal display panels to capitalize on the popularity of smartphones.

Among them is Toshiba Corp, which is considering building a new plant in Ishikawa Prefecture for such panels for smartphones.
