WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested, and remanded in custody, by a British court, over allegations of sex crimes in Sweden. His website, has angered US authorities by publishing secret diplomatic cables.
The WikiLeaks founder made his first public appearance since the release of US diplomatic cables at Westminster magistrates court.
He was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant earlier on Tuesday after handing himself in to London police.
Assange has been accused of sexual misconduct by two female WikiLeaks volunteers in Sweden.
He was refused bail in an extradition case that could see him sent to Sweden. Assange denies the allegations and pledged to fight the extradition.
Some in Stockholm see a link between the charges and the release of the secret diplomatic cables.
Magnus Silverberg, said, "My personal view is that perhaps this rape has not taken place at all and it's about rubbishing him and WikiLeaks in that way. It's a conspiracy theory that I have thought about."
Haidar Golam, said, "It's always like that. When people leak secrets about governments, they try to silence them. It's always been like that."
The US government and others across the world have argued the publication of cables is irresponsible and could put their national security at risk.
The WikiLeaks group says the arrest of Assange will not affect its operation and it will continue to release more cables.
