أحدEgyptian opposition groups on Tuesday’s night called for President Hosni Mubarak not to run for a sixth term in September's presidential election.
In a press conference, opposition movements also demanded that Mubarak’s younger son, Gamal, who heads the ruling National Democratic Party’s Policies Secretariat, not to be nominated as a presidential candidate.
“Today’s demonstrations will be a turning point in the history of the Egyptian people,” said Abdel Gelil Moustafa, coordinator of the National Association for Change (NAC), a loose coalition of reform groups led by Mohamed ElBaradei. “It’s only the beginning.”
Along with the NAC, the liberal Ghad and Democratic Front parties, had signed the statement.
They also called for dissolving the newly elected parliament where the NDP dominates more than 90 percent of its seats.
Yesterday, the 6 April group, a youth opposition coalition, declared that the main demands of the Day of Anger today are the dismissal of Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, the setting of a minimum wage and ending the emergency laws.
