Sian Police Name Second Woman Found Dead

4:13pm UK, Tuesday April 05, 2011

David Crabtree, in Eastleach

Detectives have revealed the identity of a woman whose remains were uncovered in a Gloucestershire field.

She was Rebecca Godden-Edwards, known to family and friends as Becky, and would have celebrated her 29th birthday on Monday.

Her family reported her missing to the National Missing Persons Helpline in 2007 after becoming concerned at the lack of contact from her.

It is believed Miss Godden-Edwards disappeared from the Swindon area sometime around 2003 after becoming "disconnected" from her family and falling into the drug scene. Her family believed she was living in the Bristol area.

Police are still investigating how she died.

A message was posted on a missing persons website in July, 2010, by Karen Edwards, requesting any information about Miss Godden-Edwards.

It read: "Karen Edwards is trying to trace the location of Becky she has been missing for eight years, and I need to contact her urgent or just to know that she is ok! can anyone help? she could also be in the Bristol area."

Police began searching near the village of Eastleach shortly after the discovery of Sian O'Callaghan's body 17 miles away at Uffington Hill in Oxfordshire.

Miss O'Callaghan, 22, was last seen alive leaving a Swindon nightclub in the early hours of March 19.

At the opening of the inquest into her death, the coroner said she is likely to have died from head injuries.

Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher confirmed police would be speaking to minicab driver Christopher Halliwell - who has been charged with Miss O'Callaghan's murder - as part of their enquiries.

He also appealed to the public for any information about Miss Godden-Edwards, who was from the Shaw area of Swindon, from 2002 onwards.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"What I'm interested in are Becky's movements, her friends, her lifestyle, any small piece of information which may help me piece back together how she came to meet her death," said Det Supt Fulcher.

The Edwards family released a statement which read: "The family is completely devastated by the news of Becky's death and at this time wish to be left alone to grieve for our beautiful daughter."

Tributes left to Rebecca Godden

Officers left flowers at the site where the remains were found

Two days after the start of the Eastleach dig police began to recover the bones of a young woman.

Police are confident they have the right identity after finding a DNA match to Miss Godden-Edwards with a probability approaching one in a billion.
