Thousands of people have rallied in Spain's capital Madrid, protesting against tough austerity measures by the government.

police used batons and fired rubber bullets to try to disperse the
crowds, who reportedly tried to break through to the parliament.

At least six people were injured in the clashes, including one seriously, reports say. A number of demonstrators were arrested.
Some protesters fought running battles with police late into the night.
The rally was organised by the so-called Indignant movement, which has accused the government of kidnapping democracy.
