The US Geological Survey says the 7-point-6 magnitude tremor was centered more than 220 kilometers south of the country's capital, Port Vila.

In response, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Fiji. Officials there later canceled the alert, after reporting that a small tsunami had occurred.

Vanuatu and New Caledonia residents say they felt the seismic shift, but did not see any large waves.
